Coffee drinking has been a feature of ‘everyday’ life for far longer than we imagine. Naturally, the people who make great coffee, the Baristas, have been there for their patrons all along – it’s just that we haven’t realised it!
Now, after years of intensive research, we can reveal where, and how, it all began.
Introducing Saint Drogo The Patron Saint of Baristas

What do we know about this enigmatic figure, hidden for so long in the impenetrable mists of time?
This is the story that can now be told.
Saint Drogo, more commonly known as Barista Sancta, also as Dreux or Dugo, was born in Epinoy, Flanders 1105, died in Sebourg, France, 1186.
Although Drogo came from humble beginnings he achieved great things.
From the very start, he was a man of mystery. The locals soon noticed that he could appear in two different places simultaneously, e.g. farmers saw him working in the fields whilst priests reported him attending Mass, at the same time!
Bi-location, although considered to be a little ‘spooky’, meant that Drogo could be, and was, a very busy man!
So, in addition to farming and praying, Saint Drogo could also manage the local Tavern serving ales, wines, and honeyed mead to his local customers, all at the same time.
Drogo was a master brewer, but his speciality concoction, though, was a hot, dark, highly aromatic, coffee-based beverage that was said to cause palpitations, a racing mind, and sleepless nights!
When his brother monks had a need to keep long and arduous all-night vigils, Saint Drogo’s special brew was just the job. Saint Drogo called it his ‘Wide Awake’ drink! The monks called it a miracle.
Here, below, is the only known image we have of Saint Drogo.
